Keene State College Graduation Platform Project

The main idea revolves around the symbolism of the Keene State archway and the Keene State Owl mascot. On Student Convocation Day, our first day of freshman year, we walked through the curving arch on Appian Way. They represent the motto “Enter to Learn, Go Forth to Serve.” On our last day of college, we will exit the arch on “Commencement Day,” and enter the real world, fulfilling our graduation requirements to serve our community.

The second main idea involves the Keene State mascot of our Owl, a symbol of wisdom. We have passed our examinations and are awarded qualification. We have been sheltered under its “wing” the past four years. On this last day, we are taking “flight,” leaving our nest, making our own paths for the future, and leaving Keene State behind.

The arches represent the head of the owl, the columns the ears, the arch the head, and its flanking roofs the start of the shoulders and wings. The translucent panels in the roofs provide natural daylight for the graduates walking across the stage, a stark contrast to the current shady and dark design. Exposed joists represent the bones of the wing, reaching out from the roofs to create an organic image. Graduates will walk out in front of the arch to receive their diploma, pause to have their picture taken, and continue down the ramp towards the back of the platform. The design encompasses the values of Keene State College, and gives graduates and parents an experience that they will never forget on this day to remember.
