Studio I Project - Chamberlain Cottage
Original Chamberlain Cottage
The Chamberlain Cottage located in Wayland, Massachusetts is a famous structure designed in the 1940’s by renowned architect and Bauhaus contributor, Marcel Breuer. Architecture students were challenged to study this successful design and create four individual additions that relate to the existing structure, “sit lightly” on the site, and fulfill programmatic objectives.
The Cottage Addition
My addition is directly attached to the existing Chamberlain Cottage. Through this direct connection, I creatively engaged in formal explorations and minimally altered the existing structure. Conceptually the house is split into two axis. The axis parallel to the addition reinforces symmetry between new and existing. The other axis aligns with both the existing Chamberlain Cottage basement, and the new addition. This was designed to reinforce the connection that the houses have between each other. The two buildings are further directly connected with the same programmatic areas in the addition, public, semi-private, and private that the Chamberlain Cottage was split into. My main idea for this project was to work along these axis to create areas and spaces around them that fulfill clients’ needs while at the same time, incorporating the Chamberlain Cottage into the addition.
